Large stores are easy to find, but smaller specialty shops are everywhere too. You can compare several stores for the same hobby, explore an entire building filled with different shops, or simply follow something that catches your eye.

You may arrive looking for one thing and leave interested in something completely different. A trading card shop might lead you to a figure store. A capsule toy machine might make you stop for “just one try.” A building you planned to visit for ten minutes might keep you exploring for an hour.

Akihabara also lets you go deep into a single interest. Buildings such as Radio Kaikan bring many specialty shops together, so once you find a genre you like, you can spend as much time exploring it as you want.

Ikebukuro is home to major anime and character-focused destinations, especially around the eastern side of the station.
Rather than trying to explore everything at once, this is a place where having something you already love can give your trip a natural direction.
池袋には、駅の東側を中心に、 アニメやキャラクター文化を楽しめるさまざまなスポットがあります。
この街では、最初からすべてを見ようとするよりも、 すでに自分が好きなものを一つ持っていると、 自然と旅の方向が見えてきます。

A certain kind of merchandise you collect.
Sometimes, one interest is all you need to start exploring.

Start with What You Already Love | まずは「好き」から始めてみる
One of the most recognizable destinations is the Animate Ikebukuro Main Store.
But visiting one major store does not have to be the end of the experience.
Once you start looking for a particular anime, character, or kind of merchandise, another destination may catch your attention. Then another.
That is when Ikebukuro starts to become interesting in a different way.
You are not simply looking around anymore.
You are following what you love.
代表的な目的地の一つが、アニメイト池袋本店です。
でも、大きなお店を一つ訪れて終わりとは限りません。
好きなアニメやキャラクター、欲しいグッズを探し始めると、 今度は別の場所が気になってきます。そして、その次も。

Around areas such as Otome Road, shops and entertainment connected to anime and character culture give you more reasons to keep exploring.
You might arrive with one destination in mind, then notice another shop nearby. Something there reminds you of another character, another series, or something else you want to look for.
One destination leads to another.
One discovery creates the next reason to keep going.
And the more you find what you love, the more interesting the area becomes.

And Then… You Start Going Deeper | そして、少しずつ深くなっていく
This is one of the things I find interesting about walking through Ikebukuro.
You do not necessarily need a long list of places before you arrive.
Sometimes you just need one thing you really like.
Follow it.
See where it takes you.
Because once you find something that connects with your interests, it becomes surprisingly easy to want to see just one more shop— and then one more after that.
The more you find what you love, the deeper you want to go.
And that feeling has an interesting expression in Japanese.
実際に池袋を歩いていて、 おもしろいと感じるのがここです。
最初から長い行き先リストを用意しなくてもいいのかもしれません。
本当に好きなものが、一つあればいい。
それを追いかけてみてください。

Going Down the “Numa” | 日本でいう「沼る」
In Japanese fan culture, people sometimes use the word “numa” (沼)—literally, a “swamp”— when talking about something they become deeply absorbed in.
Going deeper and deeper into something you love can be described as “numaru” (沼る).
It is that feeling when one discovery makes you want another.
Then another.
And before you realize it, you are much deeper into your interest than when you started.
Ikebukuro can be very good at creating that feeling.
You may come here because you already love something.
Keep following that interest, and see how deep it takes you.

Shinjuku is a city in motion.
People cross the streets in every direction. Cars move through busy intersections. Trains arrive and leave from one of Tokyo’s largest transportation hubs.
Everyone seems to be heading somewhere.
And if you are planning an otaku trip across Tokyo, that movement can become part of your adventure.
新宿は、動き続けている街です。
交差点では人々がさまざまな方向へ歩き、道路には車が行き交い、巨大なターミナルには電車が到着して、また別の場所へ出発していきます。

Where Different Journeys Cross | さまざまな旅が交差する場所
Shinjuku is different from a destination you visit simply to explore as many otaku shops as possible.
There are places to enjoy anime, games, character goods, and pop culture here too. But for an otaku traveler, Shinjuku has another strength.
From here, you can head toward Akihabara, Ikebukuro, Nakano, and many other parts of Tokyo.
You can arrive from the airport, stay around Shinjuku, explore another part of the city during the day, and return again at night.
Shinjuku does not have to be the main destination of your trip.
It can be the place that connects your destinations together.
新宿は、たくさんのオタクショップを巡ることだけを目的に訪れる街とは少し違います。
もちろん、新宿にもアニメやゲーム、キャラクターグッズ、ポップカルチャーを楽しめる場所があります。しかし、オタク旅行者にとっての新宿には、もう一つの強みがあります。
ここから秋葉原、池袋、中野、そして東京のさまざまな場所へ向かうことができます。

Your morning might begin with an otaku destination.

And somewhere along the way, you might find a new interest you did not expect.
You do not have to choose between an otaku trip and a Tokyo trip.
They can be the same adventure.
もちろん、オタク旅を続けるために、いつも新宿から別の街へ移動する必要があるわけではありません。
新宿マルイ アネックスのように、アニメやゲーム、キャラクターグッズなどのポップカルチャーを楽しめる場所もあります。
朝はオタクスポットから始まるかもしれません。
午後は、まったく違う東京を楽しんでいるかもしれません。
そして、その途中で予定していなかった新しい「好き」が見つかるかもしれません。
「オタク旅」と「東京旅行」を、別々に考える必要はありません。

From Nakano Station, the streets ahead lead you toward one of the area’s best-known destinations: Nakano Broadway.
But getting there is part of the experience too.
Walk through the shopping streets, follow the people moving ahead, and let the atmosphere gradually change as you approach the entrance.
You know where you are going.
You just don’t know what you are going to find.

Nakano Broadway is known for its many specialty shops dealing in anime and manga goods, figures, toys, collectibles, and older or harder-to-find items.
But a list of what you can buy here does not completely explain the experience.
One shop may have something you have been searching for.
Another may have an old figure or collectible you have never seen before.
Turn another corner, look through another display case, and something completely different may catch your eye.
That is when Nakano starts to feel less like ordinary shopping—and more like a treasure hunt.
中野ブロードウェイには、アニメやマンガのグッズ、フィギュア、玩具、コレクターズアイテム、少し昔のものや見つけにくい品などを扱う専門店が集まっています。
でも、「何が売っているのか」を並べるだけでは、ここを歩くおもしろさのすべては伝わりません。
